VITREDURVitredur is a crystalline material commonly used in the Jade Empire of Ingen, prized primarily for its dual conductivity or reflectivity depending on the manufacturing process.
Created by artificially compressing and cooling mineral-rich magma, such as that which can be drawn from the crust of the planet Don in the Laptev System, a form of gravatic manipulation is used to artificially anneal the resultant crystalline structure. This results in a structure with ductile and tensile properties similar to steel but that can achieve edges several times sharper. Its remarkable sharpness and modest durability aside, the most important characteristic of vitredur is its conductive properties. It is an excellent conductor of various forms of energy and can be used as the basis for a hikatana, a form of holoblade. Thin layers of vitredur can also be used in conjunction with energy collectors to create energy sinks that absorb and collect incoming energy including, but not limited to, light, heat, electricity and radiation. A thin layer of vitredur is often used as ablative protection against energy weapons for light vehicles and infantry body armour systems. |
By compressing vitredur and then cooling it over an extended period of time, and bypassing the gravatic annealing process, a cloudier, more fragmented form of vitredur can be created. Known as rough vitredur, this product is easy to shatter, making it entirely useless for weapons manufacture, but is highly reflective. It is often used in replaceable protective paneling for military vehicles and vessels. All forms of vitredur can be artificially 'stained' or coloured by adding trace amounts of specific mineral salts to them whilst superheated.
