Graviton Relays fire a constant beam of agitated gravitons, which travel through the spin foam and, upon impacting any molecule, act upon the bond length of its component atoms. This elasticizes the molecules and forces them to increase their degree of separation, which has the result of increasing the volume of the target matter by 5%. For carbon-based lifeforms and many other beings this rapid expanison is almost instantly fatal. It can also warp mechanical elements, causing catastrophic system failure and damage. The T40K is several kilometres long with a muzzle bore of 30 metres, and as such must be mounted on dedicated warships. The T40K beam propagates at just short of the speed of light, and whilst the beam itself is not visible, its effects are visible to the naked eye. Gases and light appear to faintly shimmer under the increased pressure and spacetime distortion produced by the beam, whilst careful attention to any matter struck by the beam will reveal it appearing to 'swell'.
