The Burnham M2A6/R Infantry Rifle is an electronically-fired railgun chambered in 5mm. Popular for its durable, easily modifiable and inexpensive design, it has spread throughout territories in the Axis sphere of influence and remains a popular and effective weapon decades after its first introduction. It can be 3D-printed on even value-end machines, and various schematics are available online.
SERVICE
The M2A6/R was originally designed by the R&D Bureau of the Katasian Ryk in 2434AT as a standard infantry firearm, and was rapidly adopted by many Axis nations. It was widely used during the Trathiran Revolt and reserve stocks were issued to Jade Guard militia forces during the Barlat War two decades later. Today original models, 3D reprints and clones can be found in the hands of various militaries, corporations, criminal enterprises and private individuals. It is especially prized on remote frontier worlds where its rugged and modifiable design, along with the companion AmRec system, extends its viability in the face of limited supply options.
DESIGN
The M2A6/R is wholly unremarkable in terms of firepower and range. It provides sufficient firepower to reliably deliver hits that can kill or seriously injure unarmoured and lightly armoured opponents, and it has a modular, adjustable rail system to allow for the attachment of a variety of underslung launchers, shotguns, lasers, lights and other auxiliary pieces.
The official M2A6/R is sold with a compatible AmRec system, a 25cm³ device weighing 1.1kg which can reforge any suitable ferrous material into 5mm railgun slugs. Although the performance of these 'reclaimed' rounds is variable, it enables infantry on the ground to replenish ammunition with material found in the field, and also means that soldiers can produce their own regular munitions if supplied with raw high quality materials. The AmRec has a variable input adapter which can be recharged with any electrical source, and its components are easy to replace with aftermarket parts from a range of sources, from engineering equipment to discarded kitchen appliances. Over the years the Burnham has been available, there have been many freeware programs and companion apps for a range of devices, developed to improve performance for the Burnham. Popular programs include AmRec Bible and M2A6 Reader, both of which use pattern recognition to estimate the composition of scrap metal and project its performance when used as a reclaimed round.
The AmRec system, along with the weapons mechanical durability and high rate of fire, make it a popular choice for non-conventional armed forces. The gun itself has a relatively simple design and can be cleaned and replicated with ease, and can be repaired and modified with generic components widely available on civilian markets. The polymer furniture can also be replaced with custom-printed variants, allowing for brand recognition, personal markings and cheap camouflage variants. There is a popular trade in limited edition print runs, with the rare Juice & Naps Jurassic Smasher model being worth upwards of ¥40,000 at current valuation.
