BATHHOUSES
Bathhouses, or onsen, are an important part of Ingenious cultural tradition and their use has been spread throughout the Jade Empire. Imperials are a fastidious and hygenic people and typically bathe or shower at least once a day.
Public bathhouses are open to paying customers and come in a range of styles and layouts, with pools, saunas, baths and more, both indoors and outdoors, with natural springs and artificially heat sources. Typically built in the Ingenious architectural style, there are also distinct styles present in the various territories, such as oaken longhouse saunas in the Sattran territories and marble thermae in the Mediolanii district.
Bathing is typically a communal experience, with large baths and smaller group saunas catering to casual bathers and repeat customers. Business and political meetings are often convened in bathhouses. Bathhouses often provide other services, ranging from hotel accommodation to restaurant service and spa programmes. Many bathhouses also have performance spaces and serve as venues for local performing arts, society meetings and more.
Bathhouses also often have private baths for individuals, including specialist treatments for physiotherapy and other medical needs. Weapons are strictly forbidden and must be left in a checkroom at practically all onsen, and in addition many bathhouses will have signs indicating their policies. It is common for onsen to have at least one room, or several rooms, marked with 平靜, kanji meaning 'tranquility', which indicates that military, business and monetary affairs should not be discussed in the room.
