77TH REGIMENT
The 77th Tanuki Regiment, also known as the Midnights, was first raised as the Marine complement for the SNV Teotihuacan. During Cornewaille's campaign against the Vong, the unit participated in the Battle of Midnight's Tomb when it detached a company to the surface of Xcaret, along with units from multiple allied nations, in order to defend a gravity well installation that would theoretically drain the enemy power reserves and prevent them from shielding themselves.
The Battle of Midnight's Tomb was costly for both sides. General Seiha was killed in the conflict, and of nearly 120 marines dispatched to the surface only twenty-three survived. Two JIAN operatives were also KIA during the action. Captain Blunte assumed command of the survivors and co-ordinated a rearguard action to allow evacuation of the remaining allied forces. The unit was restructured to become the 77th Regiment and deployed to the defense of Laos II. Following the Vong War, the unit was involved in various skirmishes. During the Trathiran Revolt, the regiment was engaged in boarding actions over Laptev and suffered almost 60% casualties. The survivors accompanied Jade Empress Takara into exile, during which time Daimyo Kanbei selected the unit for his successful assault on the Gau III superweapon facility. Following the Restoration, the Midnights were tasked with pacifying the planet of Legacy and establishing Legacy Province. The regiment was deployed during the Kegawa Pacification, the cleansing and securing of the former territories of the Katasian Order following the Katasian departure. During the Botas Reforms of 2486 AT, the regiment was renamed the Tanuki regiment for the Grey Raccoon Dog, or Tanuki, found on Laptev, which is a nocturnal animal with a reputation for cunning. Their regimental parade colours are black and silver. During the Sarnath Campaign they were deployed to capture the anti-orbital guns on Ba-Sten, before being deployed to Cass City as a reserve force following heavy losses experienced by the first wave of marines there.
