Q-CYL AMMUNITION
Q-CYL ammunition, standing for Quartz Cylinder, is one of the most common munition types in use in the Jade Empire of Ingen. It was developed by Murata Armouries.
The type consists of a compressed quartz shell framed with ferrous metal and filled with a mix of neon-helium supercritical fluid. It comes in a range of calibres, from infantry sidearms to vast shipborne artillery munitions. DESIGNQ-CYL munitions are intended to be fired from coilgun systems via their ferrous metal framework.

They are designed to deliver kinetic penetrating damage and intense heat to the target. The compressed quartz shell, capable of containing the supercritical neon-helium mixture, is designed with a fragile point which collapses upon impact, funneling the fluid in a high-pressure jet into the target surface. The semi-fluid nature of the charge allows it to permeate even highly dense and tightly-knit materials, compromising the target's structural integrity and weakening it before the solid quartz shell and metal frame deliver a kinetic impact to the target area. The structure of the round causes significant spalling and larger calibres make for effective anti-armour weapons.
Their hexagonal design has the additional benefit of making them more efficient for storage. The Na-He mixture is stored in a compressed gaseous state at a temperature a few increments below that necessary to convert them to supercritical fluid. This, along with the inert and insulating nature of the compressed quartz shell, makes it much safer to store and transport. Upon moving from the magazine into the firing position, the metal frame penetrates the shell and allows the intense temperatures generated by the firing process to tip the Na-He mixture into a supercritical fluid state.

VARIANTS
The most commonly used calibre of Q-CYL is the Murata 10mm Q-CYL. Small enough to be effectively used in hikatana weapons such as the AA-26 Hikatana and the AA-42 Gunspear, it is a multi-purpose round effective against unarmoured and armoured foot mobiles and against lightly armoured vehicles.
A slightly larger round, the Murata 14mm Q-CYL, is used for squad support weapons and vehicle-mounted pintle weapons such as those found aboard the Solace C7 MBT and the Respite LAV.
The Type 85 Barrage Gun fires the Murata 900mm Q-CYL, a huge munition with interior quartz lattice bracing with embedded hyperdense metals to increase the structural integrity of the round and provide additional kinetic and spalling damage. The Arisaka Flame Lance fires three Murata 900mm rounds per salvo.
