NEUSATTAR
Neusattar is the secondary planet of the Laptev System and the only inhabited one other than the planet Laptev itself. Originally settled by Poleisi people from the Ancerious Galaxy approximately 10,000 years before present day, today it is home to a diverse range of cultures including the Suedians, Sattrans and Mediolanii. It is separated into seven administrative districts and has been since it became a territory of the Jade Empire it 2430 AT. Since then it has developed into an important centre of industrial manufacturing and development and is home to roughly twelve billion people.
CULTUREThe people of Neusattar, an ancient Poleisi word meaning 'New Colony', are unified by their shared heritage and religion.
This culture is still prevalent across the planet, the military pressures of its pre-industrial culture only intensified by the devastating invasion that led to the planet's relief and annexation by the Jade Empire. The people of North and West Sattar District in the northern reaches are hardy and fractious seafarers, still commonly living in extended familial enclaves. They drink mead and whiskey in abundance, and create art in the form of wood and leather carving, epic saga poetry and monolithic structures. To the south lies Suedia District, formerly a single feudal kingdom ruling over a patchwork of lesser baronies, duchies, fiefs and smallholdings. Boasting a long chivalric tradition, the Suedians are a courtly people with a culture rooted in agrarian folk tradition, music and fairs. |
West of Sattar is Grauforst, a misty and forest-covered District that is thinly populated. The people of Grauforst are staid, gods-fearing and superstitious, and famous for their work ethic. Beyond them lies Aegge, whose cheerful yet poetically-minded inhabitants have a distinct brogue to their accent and are famous as heavy drinkers and revellers.
In the south the Mediolanii are split into two districts, Calcaria and Athoi. Calcaria was once home to the Calcarian Empire, an ancient nation which arose during the Dark Age of Neusattar and dominated much of the planet's Bronze Age. The islands of Athoi were home to many distinct city-states. Today Mediolanii District is known for sunny beaches and a welcoming, easygoing population.

GEOGRAPHY
North and West Sattar are both cold districts, with temperatures regularly reaching -40°C in winter and rarely exceeding 20°C in summer. Their coastlines are dominated by fjords, whilst inland forests of evergreen trees give way to the peaks of the Alphos mountains. Important cities in the region include Neugrad on the southern coast of West Sattar, Visborg on the eastern coast of North Sattar, and the ritual city of Iggnir high in the border territories of the Alphos mountains.
Grauforst is a little warmer, but prone to rain and fog. Its dense forestry precluded the development of large farmland, although the city of Arkenfurt on the shores of Lake Arken is surrounded by arable pastures. Aegge is windswept and boasts high moorland, although in its sweeping valleys small pasturages of lush greenery abound.
Suedia District is a temperate, rainy region with a consistent temperature of between -5°C and 25°C, ideal for agriculture. It has wide pasturage and fields interspersed with deciduous forests and woodland and plenty of rivers and courseways, leading to gentle foothills in the west beyond which lies the eastern range of the Alphos mountains. The capitol and largest city of Suedia District is Ashby, the seat of the former Kings of Suedia, whilst Aquae Sulis, a former Calcarian colony city, is now a thriving cultural hub.
Calcaria District covers a large island chain in the south-west and boasts a warm and sunny district, it can reach extremes of 40°C in summer. The ancient city of Calcaria was once the centre of the Calcarian Empire, with Vectis on the east coast a major trading port.
Athoi is an archipelago halfway between Calcaria and Suedia, and has a slightly cooler but altogether similar climate to Calcaria.

ECONOMY
The entire planet is an industrial powerhouse, producing manufactured goods that are shipped across the Jade Empire. Sattar District is home to several large manufactories, as well as a carefully managed lumber industry and an abundance of mining operations.
Suedia is a mercantile and financial hub and produces an abundance of foodstuffs, both livestock and crop, whilst Calcaria and Athoi Districts are a net exporter of seafood and exotic fruits and crops.

HISTORY
Neusattar was originally uninhabited by sapient life, but approximately 10,000 years before present day, the Lost Colony arrived from the Ancerious Galaxy. A fleet of unknown size, the Lost Colony was a colonisation mission from the ancient Poleisi League of the Ancerious Galaxy. Following navigational errors that saw them skirt too close to a tachyonic outflow, the Lost Colony was cast adrift. After several months of sailing at FTL speeds, they eventually reached the Laptev System, but collided with the Simenov Ice Cloud and the survivors were forced to make a crash landing on Neusattar. The light emitted by their entry into the Laptev System and their crashing onto Neusattar is speculated to have been the astronomical event witnessed by prehistoric Ingenious peoples that gave rise to the legend of the Duel in Heaven.
Of the thousands of people aboard the fleet, only a few hundred survived the crash, with much of their technology either destroyed or rendered useless by the distance from the Ancerious Galaxy. The survivors struggled to survive on a hostile planet and with a low population, and initially organised themselves as a palace economy with an annually elected tyrant with absolute power. Centered around a palace built partially from the remains of one of their colony ships, the 'New Colony' lasted for several decades and the population grew to over a thousand individuals, but approximately sixty years following their arrival a series of overly hot summers that damaged the harvest resulted in starvation and unrest. A civil war known as the Rhipsaspia ensued and the New Colony collapsed, splintering into several groups and heralding the beginning of the Dark Ages.
Over the next few millenia, the surviving Poleisi scattered, setting out to find new places to inhabit. Over this time, much of their original technological understanding had been lost and even their own history had been relegated to mythological tales and oral histories. By the time of first contact with the Jade Empire in the 25th century, Neusattar was still in what would be roughly described as the Low Middle Ages. Steelworking was widespread, and the various regions of the planet were split into a variety of petty kingdoms, including the Calcarian Empire, the Confederacy of Athoi, the Kingdom of Suedia and the many Sattran clans and kingdoms known collectively as the Flickenreich.
During the Vong War, the planet was assaulted and occupied by alien forces who destroyed much of the political infrastructure and hierarchy of Neusattar. Despite mounting strong resistance to the invasion, the local population was largely overwhelmed. Relief forces from the Kuribayashi Shogunate drove the Vong fleet out of the Laptev System in late 2429 AT and began landing ground forces to retake Neusattar from the Vong. Mobilising survivors from across the planet, the Shogunate was able to completely rid Neusattar of invading forces by mid 2430 AT.
At a Rede of the surviving clan leaders, the Sattrans relected to become a Province of the Shogunate. Soon after, the Kingdom of Suedia and the Calcarian Empire both sent envoys offering themselves as vassals to the Jade Empire. A formal gathering known as the Great Council was held in which the terms of annexation were formalised, following which the Jade Empire launched a program of infrastructural and economic development, as well as widespread educational programs to Imperialise the planet. This resulted in an economic boom through the early 30s.
