Capture of the FDS Dilinam Orezant
The Capture of the FDS Dilinam Orezant, otherwise known as the Battle of Luasu Roads, was a frigate duel between the IJN Volley of Arrows, a Katsumoto-class frigate under Captain Koyuki Karo and the FDS Dilinam Orezant, a Frightener-class frigate under Captain Kolmandit Omedema. The Dilinam pursued a civilian corvette carrying Jade Princess Mariko from the Luasu System and was intercepted by the Volley. After both vessels refused to stand down, the Volley opened fire, leading to a brief battle that ended in the surrender and capture of the Dilinam.
BACKGROUNDMariko had been missing from Jade territory for some time previous to the battle, and along with several friends had been helping a Gaussian renegade named Takamo in his attempts to recover relics of the Gaussian deity Kragleosha. However, when their corvette attempted to infiltrate the Furrelian-occupied system of Luasu to retrieve a relic there, it was stopped by Furrelian warships and fired upon. Takamo was killed and the survivors carried out an FTL jump to escape the system. They gave out a distress call which the Volley responded to, arriving just moments before the Dilinam arrived in pursuit from the Luasu system.
ORDER OF BATTLEThe ships were of relatively equal size and strength. The Katsumoto class measured 660m in length, with a spinal Type 85 Barrage Gun and four 912-LB railgun turrets, as well as missile systems and a wing of 12 Raijin gyoraikitai fightercraft.
The Frightener class measured 568m, with a spinal emplacement, VLS missile bays and 10 disruptor turrets, as well as a complement of 32 unmanned combat drones. INITIAL EXCHANGE OF FIREThe Dilinam emerged from FTL in close proximity to both the Volley and the Princess' corvette. Captain Karo hailed the Dilinam and demanded they stand off, and in response Captain Omedema insisted that the Volley withdraw and allow them to intercept the Princess' corvette.
As the Dilinam passed overhead, still bleeding momentum from its FTL transit, the Volley opened fire with its 912-LB railguns and launched its fighter escort. The ships passed without major damage to either vessel, turning about to find themselves in a head-to-head position. An exchange of gunfire saw the spinal weapon of the Dilinam disabled by fire from the Volley's Type 85 Barrage Gun. Two squadrons of the Volley's Raijin fighter complement |
launched an attack on the Dilinam's stern, but point-defense weapons killed Lieutenant Sogo Tsunetoki, commander of the fighter complement.
SECOND PASS
With his spinal weapon destroyed, Captain Omedema elected to try and pass underneath the Jade vessel, taking advantage of its sparse lower weapons coverage. The Dilinam was able to inflict damage on the prow of the Volley as the maneuver began, killing engineer lead Bosun Sujio. In response, the Volley engaged in a split-s manuever, spinning first along its longditudinal axis to present its deck to the enemy and continue to fire. It then turned about its vertical axis, raising its prow and lowering its stern to bring it into position behind the Dilinam, allowing it to open fire on the Dilinam's engine blocks. Simultaneously, Bronze Squadron came into contact with the Dilinam's unmanned drone complement. Bronze Squadron was supported by Atlatl MTM interceptors launched from the Volley and was able to destroy or disable most of the drones as they launched, but lost two of its four fighters, with one pilot recovered safely. Gold Squadron continued its attack and launched missiles at the Dilinam's engine blocks. Combined with the Type 85 fire from the Volley, this caused significant damage and degraded the Dilinam's ability to maneuver.
SURRENDER OF THE DILINAM
The Dilinam attempted to come about but was unable to outmanuever the Volley, having taken significant damage to its primary engines. With the Volley holding position off its port stern quarter, Karo issued a demand for the Dilinam to surrender. Omedema struck his colours shortly afterwards.
